Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 include netsh trace, a new Netsh.exe context for network tracing. Commands in the netsh trace context allow you to selectively enable tracing for providers and scenarios. A provider represents an individual component in the network protocol stack, such as Windows Sockets (WinSock), Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Wireless Local Area Network (LAN) Services, or Network Device Interface Specification (NDIS). A tracing scenario is a collection of providers for a specific function, such as file sharing or wireless LAN access. You can also apply filters to exclude irrelevant details and reduce the size of the resulting Event Tracing Log (ETL) file. To perform detailed troubleshooting for networking issues, a helpdesk staff person or Microsoft’s Customer Service and Support organization typically needs both internal component tracing information and a capture of the network traffic that occurred when duplicating the problem.
Prior to Windows 7, this information had to be obtained two different ways; use Netsh.exe commands to enable and disable tracing and a packet sniffer program such as Network Monitor to capture the network traffic. Even with this information, it was difficult to tie these two sources of information together to determine when network traffic was sent relative to the events in the tracing logs. When you perform network tracing in Windows 7 with commands in the netsh trace context, ETL files can contain both network traffic and component tracing information in sequence. The ETL files can be displayed with (which provides much more efficient way to analyze and troubleshoot network problems. Open an administrator-level command prompt. In the command prompt window, type the netsh trace start scenario=directaccess capture=yes report=yes command.
Reproduce the problem that you are having with DirectAccess. In the command prompt window, type the netsh trace stop command. Netsh.exe writes tracing information to the NetTrace.etl file in the%TEMP% NetTraces folder. To see the contents of this file, open it with Network Monitor 3.3 or later. Netsh.exe also writes additional environment and troubleshooting information to the NetTrace.cab file in the%TEMP% NetTraces folder. Windows Firewall tracing provides detailed component interaction information for the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP).
WFP is a set of application programming interface (API) and system services that provide a platform for network traffic filtering applications. The WFP API allows developers to interact with the packet processing that takes place at several layers in the Windows networking stack. Network data can be filtered and modified before it reaches its destination. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security uses WFP for firewall filtering and connection security. You can use Windows Firewall tracing to capture and analyze Internet Protocol security (IPsec) security negotiation.
The Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT) is a client/server program that provides network configuration and performance testing to a users desktop or laptop computer. The system is composed of a client program (command line or java applet) and a pair of server programs (a webserver and a testing/analysis engine). Both command line and web-based clients communicate with a Web100-enhanced server to perform these diagnostic functions. Multi-level results allow novice and expert users to view and understand the test results.
Several studies have shown that the majority of network performance problems occur in or near the users’ desktop/laptop computer. These problems include, but are not limited to, duplex mismatch conditions on Ethernet/FastEthernet links, incorrectly set TCP buffers in the user’s computer, or problems with the local network infrastructure. The NDT is designed to quickly and easily identify a specific set of conditions that are known to impact network performance. A multi-level series of plain language messages, suitable for novice users, and detailed test results, suitable for a network engineer, are generated and available to the user.
Finally, the test results may be easily emailed to the appropriate administrator to assist in the problem resolution phase. The NDT consists of several components. Both client and server processes are used to perform a specific set of tests.
The server processes include a basic web browser (fakewww) to handle incoming web based client requests. The server also runs a second process (web100srv) that performs the specific tests needed to determine what problems, if any, exist. The web100srv process then analyzes the test results and returns these results to the client. Both command line (web100clt) and Web based (java applet) based clients are included in the NDT package. The command line client (web100clt) can be compiled and manually downloaded onto numerous client computers. The web based client uses a java applet to automate the testing process.
This applet is downloaded when the web server is accessed, removing the restriction to manually pre-load the software onto the client computer. This approach allows system administrators to pre-load the command line client onto their main server class computers while allowing the vast majority of users to automatically load the web based client on an as needed bases.
When things are going wrong on your Windows system it is sometimes hard to figure out where to even begin to look for an answer. One good place is to simply check the Windows Event Viewer and see if there are any entries in the event logs that can shed any light on your problem.
But, another way to assess the overall health of your system and find clues to help you solve problems is by using the Network Diagnostics tool built into Windows XP. With the Network Diagnostics tool, you can perform a scan of your system and test network connectivity and whether or not your network-related programs and services are functional. It gathers a variety of basic information about the computer system which can be helpful when given to a support person trying to help you troubleshoot your system. Getting to the tool in the first place is a tad less than intuitive (to put it mildly).
You need a support person to walk you through the myriad of options just to find it. Le petit robert.
Wi-Fi is relatively easy to configure, but optimizing, securing, and diagnosing problems with a wireless network can be a challenge. Here are five free tools that can help. Note: This list is also available as a. 1: CommView for WiFi is a packet sniffer that is specifically designed for Wi-Fi networks.
As you would expect, the program allows you to capture packets and then search them for specific strings, packet types, etc. One of the most useful features provided by this utility is an alarm ( Figure A). The software can alert you whenever certain types of traffic are detected.
Such a feature could go a long way toward improving Wi-Fi security. Figure A CommView for WiFi 2: inSSIDer is similar to the old Net Stumbler application, except that it has been modernized and it works with operating systems such as Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. The application is designed to detect wireless networks and report on their type, maximum transfer rate, and channel usage.
There is even a graphical representation of each wireless network's amplitude and channel usage ( Figure B). Figure B inSSIDer 3: Wireless Wizard is a free utility that is designed to help you get the best possible performance from your wireless network connection. In addition to providing all manner of statistics about your wireless network, the software offers a series of diagnostic tests you can use to see how well your wireless network is performing. It also includes a spectrum analyzer that recommends the best wireless channel for you to use ( Figure C). Figure C Wireless Wizard 4: Wireless Key Generator ( Figure D) is a simple application that helps improve wireless network security.
It prompts you to specify the type of security you are using on your wireless network and the key strength. It then generates a random encryption key for you to use. The use of random keys helps to reduce the temptation to use simple keys that might be easy to guess.
Wireless Key Generator 5: WeFi helps you locate free wireless hotspots throughout the world. The application's initial screen displays statistics related to your current connectivity. It also lets you see a filtered view of available hotspots. You can choose to see your favorite hotspots, approved WeSpots, or any available Wi-Fi. WeFi's best feature is the Wi-Fi maps, which show you the locations of public Wi-Fi hotspots ( Figure E). Figure E WeFi Other Wi-Fi tools? What wireless networking apps would you add to this list?
